Everybody that works there speaks English, so you do not need to know Spanish. One negative, the curtains still let in light. For casual, I would order the guacamole and chips at Barefoot Grill. I went to Mezes at Dreams and really enjoyed it. I particularly liked the flexibility of being able to go to Dreams for meals and drinks as well. People are so tired from being in the sun all day, many people do not even make it to dinner. There is one bar for night time, but it is not a bustling scene. There was a mix of large family and friend groups, as well as lots of couples. I went by myself for 4 days and it was the perfect getaway. The beach had white sand and the water was calm. Riviera Maya, Aperol spritz, Paloma’s, super man drink were a few of their specialties. The food was excellent at Bordeaux, Portofino, Oceana, and the drinks at the swim up bar were superb. And also Orlando from one of their restaurants who was our server at the beach almost every day was the best!įrom the moment arrived, I felt special even though I was not a preferred guest. The staff throughout the hotel was the best thing! Our cleaning lady was the sweetest angel she was usually there at around 9am every day. Not the best time to be cleaning when we can hear everything in the room. We were already asleep because we had to take a flight in the morning and got woken up 3 times while they cleaned from 1am-3am. The last night we stayed over someone was deep cleaning the stairs across from our room (which is great because they clean them but not when they’re doing it at 1am). Definitely not a place to be if you have work to do or need phone or laptop for anything. It also seems like it gets turned off after 11pm. The wifi service is very bad, stayed there for 6 days and had a very hard time connecting all day. My sister and I stayed at one of the rooms with private pool but could not use pool after 10pm. The staff is very attentive and friendly. Great place to stay if you want to go on a family vacation.

Quercus (KWERK-kus ) was the Roman name for the tree and virginiana (ver-jin-ee-AY-nuh) means North America and usually where the species was first noticed, such as Virginia. Botanically the Live Oak is Quercus virginiana. In the white oak family, the Live Oak’s acorns are among the mildest one can collect. Just as 200 years ago, the trees were selected for their natural curves for the ship. It got 50 live oaks from Florida in 2002 of 160 that were cleared for a golf course near Tallahassee. Sold off long ago, the Navy began stockpiling Live Oak in 1992 for restoration of the USS Constitution. Navy once had its own Live Oak forest just for boat building. Its very long, graceful limbs were ready-made for boat keels and ribs. The Live Oak is the most prized, not only for food but particularly ship building. Oaks have been a significant part of every culture around them. One variation of their word for oak was “dair, the fourth letter of the Celtic alphabet and part of the name of the city Kildare (which means “Church in the Oaks.”) Often associated with strength, the US military awards gold “oak leaf clusters” for exceptional bravery. The Celts preferred to knock on oak wood. Zeus is mangled through Dead Latin then into English.) Those faithful to ZEFF… ah… Zeus… gathered around oak trees. Greeks of old said “dryas.” Modern Greek say “dris.” It was the preferred tree of Zeus (whom the Greeks call ZEFF, rhymes with Jeff. In German it was “eih” ending up “eiche.” The Dutch extended it to “eychen” or ” eychenboom.” (I went to school with a “Cossaboom” meaning cherry tree.) Oaks are also mentioned in ancient texts. The English word “oak” is some 1,260 years old. But, it does remind me of a general rule of thumb about acorns: The bigger the cap on the acorn, compared to the size of the nut, the more bitter the nut will be. I’d hate to meet the squirrel that can carry it away. Raleigh calls itself “The City of Oaks.” The “Big Acorn” is 10 feet tall and weights 1,250 pounds. Let’s start with that fact that the world’s biggest acorn is in Moore Square Park in downtown Raleigh, North Carolina. I’ll try to say a few things that haven’t been said. As the bitterness twists your mouth into a pucker it reminds you that animals can eat a lot of things we can’t… unless we modify them.Ī lot has been said about acorns in foraging publications. Unbelievably, in 1988 Lopez was released from his maximum-security psychiatric unit for ‘good behavior,’ and his whereabouts are currently unknown.Ī famous name, Gacy is known as ‘The Killer Clown’ and is the inspiration for all the scary clown movies we see today. Lopez claims that at his ‘peak’ he was killing up to three people a week. He would pick up women along his route, murdering them. Pedro’s reign of terror crossed borders, as he traveled between Peru, Columbia, and Ecuador throughout the 1970s. Pedro was known as ‘The Monster of the Andes,’ and was convicted of killing 110 women, but criminologists believe that he may have killed upwards of 300. His pattern of animal blood and organ consumption continued until he decided that he craved human flesh. Chase reasoned that by drinking these smoothies he was preventing his heart from shrinking he feared that if it shrank too much it would disappear and then he would die. He put the entrails of the animals he had killed into a blender to make smoothies. Chase then began to capture, kill, and disembowel various animals, which he would then devour raw. Once an adult, Chase moved into a small apartment by himself. Both are common traits shown in serial killers during their youth. During his teen years, he took to alcohol and started to mutilate animals and start fires. As a child, he was abused often by his father. Shortly after his sixth murder, he was caught, and he committed suicide in prison in 1980. After they had died, he defiled their bodies, drank their blood, and ate their internal organs. He confessed to all charges and remains in prison to this day (thankfully.)Ī lesser-known but equally horrifying killer, Leonarda murdered several women in Italy from 1939 to 1940. Released after serving just six years, Kemper terrorized California, raping and murdering at least eight women, the second-to-last of which was his own mother, who he bludgeoned with a hammer and severed her head. He murdered his own grandparents, stating that he ‘just wanted to see what it felt like to kill grandma.’ Their horrifying mannerisms, their altered brain structure… below are a few of the most infamous, the worst of the worst.Įdmund’s reign of terror began when he was only 15 years old. Because of this, we fear them, they are nearly unstoppable and act upon every impulse. It’s almost as if their humanity is stripped away. We just cannot fathom the reasoning behind their madness. Understanding them, for most, is not an option. Is it a lack of empathy? Is nature or nurture responsible for creating them? Some of our most pressing questions as a society go unanswered as we study the minds of serial killers. Serial killers are also more likely to have experienced some type of child abuse or trauma. “People with low orbital cortex activity are either free-wheeling types or psychopaths.” Fallon stated. Low activity in this region means that there is less suppression of impulsive behaviors such as rage and violence. This is the area believed to be involved with ethical behavior, impulse control, and decision making. In his research, he has found chromosomal abnormalities, as well as low orbital cortex activity. Neuroscientist Jim Fallon has studied the brains of serial killers for over 20 years. You may be asking yourself, what makes a serial killer? Science has come a long way in explaining that, and it has found that the brain of a serial killer is dramatically different than what is considered normal. A literature search turns up no more than a few reports on RGD-containing plant proteins, such as the renin-like protein in the cardoon, Cynara cardunculus 4. One approach toward identifying potential cell-adhesive proteins in nature would be to look for proteins that contain the Arg–Gly–Asp (RGD) motif, which was the first cell-adhesive peptide sequence to be identified and remains the most widely applied 1, 3. Ideally, these cell culture support materials are non-animal-derived and edible, such that they do not need to be dissociated from the propagated cells and form part of the food product, thus saving time and cost. Some of the cell types employed in these nascent industries, such as muscle cells, are anchorage-dependent, requiring adhesion to a culture support material in order to survive and proliferate. In recent years, sustainability and animal welfare concerns have given rise to an endeavour to replace animal products with those obtained from cells grown in culture e.g., cell-cultivated meat, milk, and liver 2. They have the advantage of being biocompatible, in addition to possessing native ligands that can be recognized and bound by a wide range of mammalian cell types. The common biomaterials used for mammalian cell adhesion are animal-derived extracellular proteins such as collagen and fibronectin. In tissue engineering, for example, such materials are important to mediate adhesion of various cell types to scaffolds for tissue or organ regeneration 1. A method has been developed to identify candidate species and produce cell-adhesive matrices, applicable to the cell-cultivated food and healthcare industries.Ĭell-adhesive materials, specifically materials that can support the attachment, spreading, proliferation, and differentiation of cells are widely used in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. Therefore, a sustainable source of cell-adhesive proteins is widely available in the fungi kingdom. A snapshot of the RGD-containing proteins in the fungal extracts was obtained by combining SDS-PAGE and mass spectrometry of the peptide fragments obtained by enzymatic cleavage. We demonstrated a cell traction stress on the protein particles (from Flammulina velutipes) that was comparable to cells on fibronectin. These protein particles were incorporated in 3D fiber matrices encapsulating mouse myoblast cells, showing a positive effect on cell alignment. We observed the formation of protein particles in crude extracts isolated from basidiomycete fungi, which could be correlated to their stability towards particle aggregation at different temperatures. A plot of fungi species vs RGD percentage revealed that 98% of the species exhibited an RGD percentage > = 1%. Screening of a protein database for fungal and plant proteins uncovered that ~5.5% of the unique reported proteins contain RGD sequences. In this paper, we show how data mining can be a powerful approach toward identifying fungal-derived cell-adhesive proteins and present a method to isolate and utilize these proteins as extracellular matrices (ECM) to support cell adhesion and culture in 3D. With the onset of sustainability issues, there is a pressing need to find alternatives to animal-derived cell-adhesive factors, especially for cell-cultivated food applications. Cell-adhesive factors mediate adhesion of cells to substrates via peptide motifs such as the Arg–Gly–Asp (RGD) sequence. The order that you apply your changes matters. Changes made in Aggregate, Pivot, Join, and Union step types are performed either before or after those cleaning actions, depending on where the field is when you make the change. Where the change was made is shown in the Changes pane for the step. The following example shows changes made to several fields in a Join step. The change is performed before the join action to give the corrected results. The following table shows where the cleaning action is performed in Aggregate, Pivot, Join, and Union step types depending on where the field is in the step. Note: For joins, if the field is a calculated field that was created using a field from one table, the change is applied before the join. If the field is created with fields from both tables, the change is applied after the join. To apply cleaning operations to fields, use the toolbar options or click More options on the field profile card, data grid, or Results pane to open the menu. In Aggregate, Pivot, Join, and Union step types, the More options menu is available on the profile cards in the Results pane and corresponding data grid. If you perform the same cleaning operations or actions over and over throughout your flow, you can copy and paste your steps, actions, or even fields.
